Vijay Deverakonda’s Kingdom Opens With ₹7.54 Crore – Fails to Beat Liger, But Beats Family Star
Vijay Deverakonda’s much-hyped spy thriller Kingdom finally hit theatres on July 31 after multiple delays — but did it live up to the buzz at the box office? Not quite.
According to early estimates by Sacnilk, Kingdom managed a decent opening day collection of ₹7.54 crore across India. While it did better than his recent flop The Family Star (₹5.75 crore on Day 1), it couldn’t touch the numbers of his previous big openers like Kushi (₹15.25 crore) or his career-best Liger (₹15.95 crore).
Mixed Start: Here’s How Kingdom Performed on Day 1
Despite the anticipation, Kingdom couldn’t break into the double-digit club on its first day. The film recorded an overall Telugu occupancy of 56.73% on Thursday. Morning shows started strong with 63.56% occupancy, dipped slightly in the afternoon to 56.52%, and dropped further to 50.12% for night shows.
What’s Kingdom About?
In Kingdom, Vijay plays Suri, a police constable-turned-spy who’s sent on a high-stakes mission to Sri Lanka by the Indian government. But there’s more — Suri is also searching for his long-lost brother Siva, played by Satyadev. Bhagyashri Borse plays Suri’s love interest in this action-packed drama.
The movie ends with a cliffhanger that left fans buzzing. And there’s good news — producer Naga Vamsi confirmed in a press meet that a sequel is already in the works.
What the Reviews Are Saying
Critics had mixed reactions to Kingdom. While Vijay’s performance received a big thumbs up, the screenplay — especially in the second half — came under fire. A review by Hindustan Times praised the actor:
“Vijay finally gets his redemption arc with Kingdom, both as an actor and character. After a long time, you see the theatre actor and the star in him come out. There might be moments where he fumbles, but he quickly finds his footing and plays the varied shades well.”
So, while Kingdom may not have broken records, it’s given Vijay a step in the right direction — and fans already have their eyes set on Part 2.
